Michael5985 thanks for the explanation of resizing. Many small businesses like ours try to avoid this sort of expenditure where we can. I am aware that a new HD is eventually going to be essential, but the longer I can hang on the better. I routinely prune these, which does make a huge difference. Some of you have mentioned log files, Symantec download files etc. I had no idea this would spark such a debate! I rather assumed it was only my Dell server! Thanks everyone for chipping in. Please note that RAID works at the disk level and resizing partitions will not affect your RAID configuration. If you have never done this before then I would recommend that you setup an XP machine with a similar partition configuration as your server and try these tool before doing it on the server. It can take over an hour for the resize process to complete and please note that your server will be offline while this happens. The second operation would be to then extend the C:\ OS partition to include the new unpartition space.īoth Acronis and gParted will allow you to graphically adjust these partition, provide you with a summary of the operation it is about to carry before finally going ahead with it. ALSO ENSURE YOUR SERVER IS CONNECTED TO A UPS IN CASE OF A POWER FAILURE.Įssentially, you need to resize the D partition by moving the begining of the partition rightwards so an amount of unpartition space becomes available after the c:\ OS partition. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE BACKUP YOUR SERVER BEFORE THESE CHANGES. I'm assuming you have enough space on the D:\ drive. To resolve this issue completely, StratLabED needs to expand the OS partition which I have personally done many times using Acronis Disk Director or gParted Live CD. I have been in this situation countless times as a result of Dell creating 12 Gig OS partitions. Personally I always rebuild all our new server. Great tips and tricks to help fix this issue but we are not really fixing this issue. Thanks everyone for your help so far - much appreciated I will Google it, unless someone can point me in the correct direction I will use Add/Remove to remove what I can - I assume no harm will come in removing the items I listed? Thanks for the tip about communications - noted I will have a go at C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\servicepackcache and see what happens It seems the downloads folder may not be such a good idea - we use WSUS on this server so it will simply fill up again if I have understood you correctly. Meanwhile I want to keep things going for as long as possible! Our discs are RAID - my knowledge is limited! I am able to move all these excess files to another drive which I have already been doing. Obviously I will look at that again if it becomes necessary. I have already enquired about enlarging it, but was informed that this would be expensive, and not too simple, and might require simply require a bottom up rebuild. The server was set up before I arrived with a 10Gb partition for the OS. Speech Engines in C:\Program Files\Common Files\SpeechEnginesĪnd how do I delete them especially if they are not in Add/Remove?Īny other ideas?
